Your Guide to Residential Window Tinting
Window tint isn’t just for vehicles. Homeowners are turning to residential window tint (also known as solar film) for privacy, UV ray protection and more. While Window World doesn’t offer window tinting services, we want to provide you with a basic understanding of how it works.
Author’s Note: Before making any modifications to your windows, we advise speaking with a representative from Window World of Des Moines to explore your options. With SolarZone™ technology, our windows effortlessly cut energy consumption and reduce damage from the sun’s UV rays.
Types of Window Tint Film
Not all window film is made equally. There are three main types of window film to choose from based on your needs.
Solar Home Window Tint
Solar window film is the most popular type of residential window tint. The solar film not only blocks UV rays from the sun but is also difficult to see through. This film also reduces glare and sun damage to decor and furniture.
Security Home Window Tint
As the thickest window film available, security window tint helps to keep your windows intact. Your windows are less likely to shatter with a security film, making them the best protection against severe weather and home invasions.
Decorative Home Window Tint
Decorative window film effortlessly beautifies any window. It’s the thinnest window film available, so it won’t reflect much heat or grant extra privacy. Decorative window film comes in a variety of designs, colors and patterns, providing plenty of opportunities for a personalized touch to your windows.
Does the Type of Window Matter?
Typically, you can apply each type of window film to the common window types—annealed, heat-treated and insulated glass. There are some exceptions, especially when applying solar window tint. It’s important to note that window tint will not address inflated energy costs related to ill-fitted or damaged windows.
Home Window Tinting Pros
With any home improvement project, there are pros and cons to consider. Here are a few pros of residential window tinting:
-
Boosted energy efficiency. With fewer UV rays coming through your windows, it’s easier to regulate your home’s climate without constantly adjusting the thermostat.
-
Easy installation. Installing residential window film is relatively inexpensive and easy, as long as you do your research.
-
Affordable solution. Adding decorative detail or heightened security with window film is oftentimes cheaper than installing high-quality window treatments like blinds or shades.
Home Window Tinting Cons
The biggest con of residential window tinting is risking your window’s warranty. Some warranties are voided when any unauthorized modifications are made, meaning that any future damages or problems with your windows must be paid out-of-pocket. For damaged or aged windows, consider investing in energy-efficient replacements before making cosmetic modifications.
